According to legend, Kaldi, a 9th century (A.D.) Abyssinian goatherd, noticed the peculiar excited behavior of his goats who had been eating the red berries from some nearby bushes. Kaldi tried some himself and experienced a similar sensation. In later years, the berries were roasted and brewed.
